DIY {Nautical Shoes II}

After making nautical rope shoe clips, I decided to create a few more options for my striped shoes. I saw some similar details on shoes this season, which I thought was a really cute touch to add a little nautical to any look. What I like about shoe clips is that you aren’t stuck with one style and can change them out whenever want.

For this project, I simply used some vintage buttons and attached them to shoe clips. IMG_5393_1_c

Supplies Needed:

  • A pair of striped shoes. I got these Wanted shoes from Amazon.com
  • Shoe clips (purchased these from Rings & Things)
  • Gold/Vintage/Nautical or other buttons of choice
  • Needle nose pliers with teeth (pictured below)
  • E6000 Glue (not pictured)
  • A disposable cup, tin can, or glass jar

Steps:

1. First use your needle nose pliers to remove the hoop on the back of your button. This may require a bit of twisting and turning to pull it off - just be careful not to bend or break the button.

2. Once the hoop has been removed, the back of the button may by a bit rough. You can easily smooth it out with sandpaper or a large nail file.

3. Next, attach your shoe clips to your a place where it will be steady and can be left overnight. I put mine an a disposable cup I had laying around in my craft room.

4. Now open your E6000 glue and put a small amount on a shoe clip and just a touch on the back of your button.

5. Carefully put your button onto the shoe clip and tape it down. This will keep it in place as it dries. Do the same with the other button & shoe clip.

6. Allow your clips to dry overnight. Once dried, carefully remove the tape.

7. Once dried, you can go ahead and put your shoe clips on your shoes.

7. That’s it! You now have a nautical detail to add your shoes.

8. Change them out for a little bit of a different look.

8. Change them out as you please for a little bit of a different look.

The options for these shoes are really endless. There are a lot of different nautical buttons, such as anchors, ship wheels, and sailboats, available at craft and fabric stores. Of course, you can get vintage ones like mine at just about any secondhand store or online.

I’m still feeling the nautical theme, as I’m just getting ready to leave for summer vacation. We are heading out for Hawaii soon and I honestly just cannot wait! I have a lot of things I need to do before we go, but I know I’ll get it done. It’s been such a rainy summer here and we’ve been so busy with work stuff, that we’re really feeling ready for continuous days of sun and relaxation. Hoping to be on beach soon with a Mai Tai in hand!
